چکیده

(ARQ) link layer protocols for wireless connections. However, a drawback comes with their use when transferring mixed traffic type, which is the introduction of excessive and highly jittered transmission delay, which negatively affect the performance of both real-time and TCP traffic. Here, we propose a selective ARQ protocol which is capable of switching between ARQ and non-ARQ modes based on two policies which we have defined. Our first policy is based on the assumption that for real-time traffic minimisation of delay is more important than reliable transmission. The second policy is an extension of the first and introduces a mechanism, which monitors the length of the buffer queue to decide whether or not packets should be sent with or without ARQ. Results obtained in this research show that real-time traffic can be sent with minimal delay jitter and within certain time boundaries, whilst TCP throughput can be increased significantly.

Analysis of link-level hybrid FEC/ARQ-SR for wireless links and long-lived TCP traffic

Since the TCP protocol uses the loss of packets as an indication of network congestion, its performance degrades over wireless links, which are characterized by a high bit error rate. Different solutions have been proposed to improve the performance of TCP over wireless links, the most promising one being the use of a hybrid model at the link level combining FEC (Forward Error Correction), ARQ-...

Out-of-Sequence in Packet Arrivals due to Layer 2 ARQ and Its Impact on TCP Performance in W-CDMA Networks

The data transmitting service over wireless networks has been further attracted with the growth of the Internet and wireless networks. However, TCP is tuned to perform well in wired networks where the error rates are very low and packet losses occur mostly because of congestion. Therefore, it can happen that the performance of TCP is severely affected by high bit error rate characterizing wirel...

Investigating Interactions between ARQ Mechanisms and TCP over Wireless Links

In this paper we investigate interactions between TCP and wireless ARQ mechanisms. The aim is to understand what is the best configuration of the wireless link protocol in order to guarantee TCP performance, seemingly a controversial issue. Interactions between TCP and different link layer mechanisms are evaluated by means of an analytic model, that reproduces a generic selective repeat ARQ pro...

Improving End-to-End Performance of TCP Using Link-Layer Retransmissions over Mobile Internetworks

TCP does not perform well in networks with high packet error rates, such as those with wireless links, since TCP assumes network congestion to be the major cause for packet losses. Wireless losses make TCP unnecessarily initiate its congestion control mechanism which results in poor performance in the form of low throughput and high interactive delay. We investigate, through computer simulation...

Multi-service link layer enhancements for the wireless Internet

Although TCP and UDP application performance over wireless links may be substantially improved via link layer error recovery, different schemes are appropriate for each application class. We present a multi-service link layer architecture that simultaneously enhances the performance of diverse applications by supporting multiple error recovery mechanisms in parallel. We simulated concurrent fil...
